This is a crowdfunding appeal to raise legal fees to test the claims by an entity called Celtic Music to the rights to a tranche of recorded works by Scottish folk legend Dick Gaughan – music recorded between 53 and 30 years ago.
If you can help Dick Gaughan towards establishing his rights to some or all of his works, allowing them to be widely heard in the 21st Century, it’s possible that the process will reveal information and set precedents that may allow other now elderly artists from the 70s or their heirs to pursue claims of their own.

The forthcoming Dick Gaughan 7CD/DVD box set R/evolution: 1969–83 includes two hours of film licensed from the BBC, STV, WDR and DR and from independent filmmakers. It also includes an ‘orphaned’ half-hour of footage filmed at the Vienna Folk Festival 1981. The originating broadcaster has not been traced – but the master copy of a bootleg version has been sourced and is restored by the mighty Eroc.
The guitar mic fails in some parts of the concert (which would have been apparent on the original broadcast). In a couple of songs, including this one, ‘Magdalen Green’ – never recorded commercially by Gaughan – Eroc has used technology to fly in the missing guitar parts from audio recordings of Gaughan concerts made during the same era supplied by box set curator Colin Harper.
He has then manipulated sound and vision to match as well as possible. The sound is then mastered and the vision – with caveats about the imperfection of the source material and the limits of possibility – sharpened. Enjoy…
