This was the thought that crossed Colin Harper’s mind one day in 2024. Colin had seen Gaughan many times in the 80s and 90s, until life got in the way and he lost track of Dick’s career after Outlaws and Dreamers(2001). He later heard, with sadness, of the stroke that ended Dick’s public performances. Fast forward to 2024, and Colin – by this point a very experienced ‘curator’ in the world of archival projects around vintage folk, jazz and rock – found himself taking a phone call from Robin Dransfield, veteran folk legend (retired) and Cornwall recluse, whose phone book more of less consists of two numbers: Dick Gaughan’s and Colin Harper’s. Robin happened to mention Dick, and a pebble started rolling down a mountain…
Colin found himself listening to Gaughan’s music for the first time in a while and thinking, ‘This man was a genius. Why have I neglected this music for so long? Why don’t we hear anything about Dick Gaughan these days?’ Indeed, to adapt some notorious graffiti on Slade back in the day, ‘Whatever happened to Dick Gaughan?’
Colin decided to use his skills and his contacts to do something about this – to create a product that would draw attention to Gaughan once again, to retrieve his artistry from Gaughan’s reissue ‘dead zone’ of the 70s, to allow old fans to engage anew with his artistry and to allow new people to maybe hear something about him – and hear something by him – for the first time. Crucially, it would also allow Dick – if he was willing to let the idea proceed – to make some money.
Colin created a 12-disc set on paper. Robin Dransfield phoned Dick. He was potentially interested. He spoke to Colin and he became enthusiastically interested. Unfortunately, Colin’s record industry contacts were not interested. Colin honed down the set to its essentials, phoned fellow Gaughanite Karine Polwart for moral support and started putting the costs together. We would do it ourselves.
The Project:
· A 7CD + DVD set with two extensive illustrated booklets: a new 10,000-word essay by Graeme Thomson in one; vintage interview features by Ian A. Anderson and the late Colin Irwin in the other.
· 126 audio tracks (9 hours) and 30 video tracks (2 hours, spanning 1970–91) from five broadcasters and two amateur documentarists
· 83 audio tracks are unreleased (43 BBC session/concert recordings & 40 club/concert recordings) including many songs and tunes never commercially recorded by Dick. All video performances are unreleased (including two otherwise unrecorded Gaughan originals).
· 2 albums in full: Gaughan (1972) and A Different Kind of Love Song(1983), both remastered for the first time
· 2 albums cherry-picked: Coppers & Brass (1977) and Parallel Lines(1982), the selections being, again, remastered for the first time
· 9 stray studio tracks from five various-artists albums (1975–81)
· Dick’s first-ever concert in the USA (Berkeley, CA, 1981) almost in full
· maximised variety of repertoire (over 100 distinct songs or tune sets)
· rare and unpublished photos from Ian A. Anderson, Dave Peabody, Frank Scott, Tom Steenbergen,
Doc Rowe and others
The 1969–83 period of focus is chosen for two reasons: (1) Dick’s career entered a distinctive new phase after his 1983 album A Different Kind of Love Song; (2) the size / expense to purchasers of the box set – 8 discs can still allow fantastic value while gathering together a fabulous body of work as a service to history and a celebration of Dick’s artistry.
The ‘Extras’:
Live in the 70s (2CD) comprises two complete club performances, recorded by Geoff Harden (Dick Gaughan & Aly Bain in Kent 1972) and Andrew Watson (Dick solo in St Andrews 1977), 24-bit transferred from original reels and mastered by Cormac O’Kane. Booklet essay by Robin Dransfield. Limited edition of 500, signed by Dick Gaughan. This can be bought in a combination with the Box Set or separately or as an 'add on' if you are an existing pledger who wants to upgrade. PLEASE follow the instructions here if 'adding on', in case you mistakenly lose your original order: https://help.kickstarter.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005126814-How-can-I-change-my-pledge-amount-or-reward-selection
Untroubled: Live in Belfast 1979–82 is 15 songs/tunes (including ‘Magdalen Green’ and a set of reels never recorded commercially by Dick) compiled from three fabulous concerts at Belfast’s Sunflower Folk Club, recorded by the late Geoff Harden. Only 500 copies will be made, in a digipak with notes by Tommy Sands and signed on a blank panel by Dick himself. Mastering by Cormac O’Kane. None of these performances appear within the box set. The music might in future be released as a Bandcamp download album but there will be no future physical release.
Why now?
1. As time goes on, accessing folk club and concert recordings from 45+ years ago becomes increasingly difficult – people pass on, recordings are lost or junked
2. The project relies on Colin Harper (self-employed) being able to give time and effort for free – that’s just about doable right now; it will not be the case in six months
3. The project also relies on the availability of several specialists: Graeme Thomson (author), Cormac O’Kane (audio), Eroc (video), Mark Case (design) – all self-employed with many other projects but willing to assist now, and all for generously reduced fees
4. The era of physical media may be contracting, yet physical media remains the only recouping mechanism to justify the financial investment necessary in gathering and mastering unreleased music – and the only way for artists to receive any meaningful revenue. It provides a digital lifeboat for music that would otherwise remain in vaults or be lost.
5. We should celebrate and reward people within their lifetime. Let’s do that for Dick Gaughan!
The Dick Gaughan ‘Legacy Gap’:
Most artists who shared Dick’s timeline have enjoyed a long tail or afterlife thanks to reissues, compilations and synchronisation (use of music in TV/film/advertising) of their vintage work in the CD and now digital eras.
Dick has been unlucky in this respect.
· Four of his 70s albums (including one with the Boys of the Lough) for Leader/Trailer and Rubber have never or only briefly (in one case) appeared on CD and are not available on streaming. Their current ownership makes licensing all but impossible.
· Two of his three Topic albums (1977–81) are available on streaming but have not been remastered or physically reissued in over 30 years.
· His two Folk Freak/Wundertüte albums (1982–83) are available on streaming but have not been remastered or physically reissued in 28 years. The owner of this material has long retired from the music business.
· His three 1985–88 Celtic Music albums are long out of print on CD and are not available on streaming.
The only ‘back catalogue activity’ for Dick’s pre-Greentrax/pre-1996 period in recent years has been the remastering of Handful of Earth (Topic, 1981) and the release of The Harvard Tapes (a short 1982 concert), both in 2019.
In short, 7 out of 12 albums are ‘missing’ entirely and only one of the other five has been sonically upgraded in the past 30-odd years, plus one sold-out ‘new old’ release six years ago from a label whose owner/MD has since passed on.
R/evolution 1969–82 will address this legacy gap and provide Dick with income that he might have had has his back catalogue been more actively refreshed and marketed in the past 30 years.
The Team:
Colin Harper (project manager, curator) is the author of six well-regarded books on music including biographies of Bert Jansch and John McLaughlin and a history of uilleann piping. He has been involved in the music reissue/archive release world since 1992. Recent box set work includes curating Horslips’ 33CD/2DVD More Than You Can Chew (Madfish, 2022), the 8CD Bert Jansch at the BBC (Earth, 2020), the 13CD Nucleus Live at the BBC (Repertoire, 2021), the 6CD Pentangle: Through the Ages (Cherry Red, 2022) and the forthcoming 20CD Martin Carthy at the BBC (Madfish, 2025). He was the subject of a BBC NI documentary in 2024 and lives in Belfast. He does academic proofreading for most of a living: https://www.belfastproofreading.com/
Cormac O’Kane is an IFTA award-winning Irish recording, mixing and mastering engineer with extensive experience as a both a sound engineer and Musical Director for shows on BBC NI, RTÉ, TG4 and Sky Arts. He has worked on several of Colin’s projects, including the restoration/mastering of the recent Bert Jansch and Horslips box sets, and has run (philanthropically) the extraordinarily successful Scott’s Jazz Club in East Belfast for the past four years and counting. https://www.redboxrecording.com/
Eroc began as drummer with German progressive rock sensations Grobschnitt and later became a successful instrumental solo artist and a legend of sound restoration/mastering. He has worked on several of Colin’s previous sets and is adept at visual restoration – including demixing/remixing sound, which will be applied to some of the content in the Gaughan DVD. Eroc recently found himself enjoying chart fame again in Germany with a self-created Dolby Atmos remix of Grobschnitt’s 1978 album Solar Music for Universal. www.eroc.de
Graeme Thomson has written extensively on music in numerous British broadsheet papers and magazines, with a series of award-winning biographies to his name, including books on Kate Bush, John Martyn, George Harrison and Johnny Cash. Colin hired Graeme previously as lead author in the extensive booklet to the 12-disc Fairport Convention set It All Came Round Again (Madfish, 2024) – he was first choice to author a new history of Dick Gaughan’s early career for this set, and he immediately said yes. He lives in Edinburgh. https://www.graemethomson.net/
Mark Case is a multiple award-winning designer from Nottinghamshire, who was MD/owner of leading Belfast corporate design studio Whitenoise for 25 years. He retired as MD this year to focus exclusively on the sort of music and book projects that he has always enjoyed doing in his spare time. He has worked on many of Colin’s previous projects. He is currently on the cusp of living in Portugal. https://coversandcovers.com/
Tim Askew filmed the Kickstarter promo video in Edinburgh, at the home of Ian and Ellen McCalman (who have been tremendous behind the scenes facilitators for the project). Tim also filmed some promotional 'shorts' with Gaughan fans and friends Andrew Cronshaw, Patsy Seddon and Chris Brain on the day. Although hired purely as a film professional, Tim got the spirit of what we were doing and went above and beyond - providing a great, no-fuss service with a smile, at the right price and with all the aftercare required. Recommended for all your filming requirements in the Edinburgh area! http://www.timaskew.co.uk/
Jo Breeze is a crowdfunding guru whose advice has helped focus the presentation of the campaign. Not least, she can deal with the back end of this platform - which seems to require skills beyond most mortals! She's also a leading apologist for Morris dancing. https://jobreeze.co.uk/
Some questions you might have…
Is Dick involved?
Yes. Dick has approved the project and is excited to see it happen. He will be giving interviews to Graeme Thomson for the booklet and recommending others for interview. He has approved the title and cover concept. While happy to be at arm's length from the curatorial process in general, he did ask Colin to seek out one particular rarity for inclusion (which was found...). Dick will have approval of all of the mastered audio and booklet contents.
What will Dick get out of it?
Dick will get every penny from direct sales after costs. The costs will be met once roughly 450 copies of the set are sold (or fewer if some of those sales also include the Live in Belfast extra). 1,500 copies of the set will be made. For sales made subsequent to the Kickstarter - bought via other platforms - these will be via a distribution deal with Last Night From Glasgow: in those cases, 80% of the dealer price will go to Dick.
Can't we just wait and hear this on streaming platforms?
No. This set will NOT be available on streaming or digital download platforms. It is a careful balance of two goals: (1) to restore a body of work in celebration of Dick's artistry (for listeners now and for posterity); (2) to make some money for the artist in imperfect health and enforced retirement. A genuine limited edition physical product is the only realistic way to achieve those two goals given the licensing and restoration/mastering costs involved.
Given indications of interest in a 'new old' vinyl offering, Colin will investigate the possibility of partnering with an existing label to release a single LP containing 40 minutes / 10 BBC tracks that are included in the box set for a 'Dick Gaughan at the BBC: 1972-79' LP. This is only a possibility - by no means guaranteed at this point, and not likely at all if the box set falls short of its funding target.
When will the set be ready?
If the funding target is met, the plan is to release the set generally in January 2026 - with a launch concert dedicated to Dick's music at Celtic Connections Festival, Glasgow. Kickstarter funders will, though, receive their copies of the set before the end of 2025, likely December. Patrons will be kept informed with regular updates as progress on the production process goes along. Purchasers of the signed 200-only Live in Belfast 1979-82 extra will receive finished copies of that within a couple of months once the target is met.
Will it be a lavishly presented set?
Within the confines of what is possible within compact specifications, yes: Graeme Thomson will deliver a multi-interview 10,000-word essay and vintage features will also be licensed in (probably also around 10,000 words' worth) from Ian A. Anderson and the estate of Colin Irwin. Rare and unpublished photos will be featured from professionals and fans and evocative scans of vintage gig ads will decorate the pages.
The set will be in 'clamshell' form - essentially, a slightly larger than CD-sized box, with discs in slim wallets and two booklets of likely 36-40 pages each, more if we feel there is content to justify it - and yes, the text will be readable!
Why not a larger 'book-sized' set, like, for instance, the popular series of Jethro Tull expanded album editions? Because the cost of that would add over £5,000 to the sum required. Yes, the 'perception of value' may be greater, but we can't justify £5,000 that would otherwise go to Dick Gaughan going to slightly more cardboard!
The set will contain an extraordinary amount of fabulous unreleased, rare or newly polished audio spanning 1969-83 and video spanning a slightly longer period plus riches in text and imagery - regardless of the compact packaging!
The target looks quite high - is it all necessary?
Yes. There are some costs that can't be avoided but will be unknown to the general music buyer. For instance, an MCPS AP2 licence to manufacture the set (based on the publishing rights of the contents) will be around £2,500 - albeit, much of that sum will end up with Dick, given the number of 'Trad arr Gaughan' credits. Also, 8% of the target is for Kickstarter fees (over £2,000). And as Kickstarter counts postage costs towards the target, £1,000 has been incorporated into the target to partly offset that. Aside from that, the best possible prices (including mates' rates for several aspects) have been sought for all other aspects of the set's creation. We are also honoured to acknowledge some financial support from TRACS (Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland) through its Trad Treasures programme, which aims to highlight the contribution of key performers from across Scotland's folk arts, which has lowered what the target would otherwise be. No one is receiving an admin fee.
Will there be further vintage Gaughan releases?
If there is demand, and if Dick is happy with such releases, there is no reason why not. There are two discs' worth of fabulous 1966-71 concert/club recordings of Dick Gaughan in the collections of the School of Scottish Studies, including much unique repertoire. This material was set aside in the process of honing the current box set down to a size that was affordable to a larger number of people - with the view that it could potentially become a standalone 2CD set in due course, again with all monies going to the artist.
A Complete Andy Kershaw Sessions 1986-2005 2CD is also a strong possibility for a future project - 26 studio session tracks almost entirely from Dick's later albums, superbly performed, and bolstered by 8 additional BBC concert tracks from 1984, 1986, 1990 and 1994: a brilliant alternative 'best of' collection representing Dick's later career.

DVD: Dick Gaughan on Film 1970–91
Note: all performances are previously unreleased. Although the DVD performance date parameters extend further than the 1969–83 focus of the audio discs, almost all of the repertoire dates to that 1969–83 period. The exceptions are the two otherwise unrecorded Gaughan originals, Ian Walker's 'Hawks and Eagles' (also never recorded by Dick) and the arrangement of Robert Burns' 'Afton Water' – performed only once ever by Dick, on an STV programme, and included here by special request of the man himself.
